A single serum measurement therefore does not readily reflect overall magnesium status. Dietary surveys also frequently find that actual intake falls below reference levels, primarily because refined grains replace whole grains and people do not eat enough dark-green vegetables. This is why, in daily supplementation, consistency usually makes more sense than taking a large amount only occasionally.
How much magnesium should you take each day, and how do you choose wisely?So what form of magnesium is our marine magnesium? It is natural magnesium obtained by concentrating and extracting seawater, with magnesium oxide as its main component and small amounts of other magnesium forms occurring naturally alongside it. Interestingly, magnesium in seawater does not occur alone. It is accompanied by a large group of minerals, including calcium and potassium, which remain together during concentration. What you consume is therefore not a single magnesium salt synthesized in a laboratory, but the complete group that seawater naturally provides.
Magnesium oxide also offers a practical advantage: it has one of the highest proportions of elemental magnesium by weight among the available forms, so each capsule delivers more elemental magnesium. There is a small trap here, however, and it has confused many people. A bottle that says “500 mg magnesium oxide” does not mean you are getting 500 mg of magnesium. That number is the weight of the entire compound. What matters is the line labeled “elemental magnesium.”

“500 mg magnesium oxide” and “500 mg elemental magnesium” on a label mean very different things. The former is the compound's total weight, of which elemental magnesium accounts for about 60%. Chelated forms such as magnesium glycinate have a much lower proportion of elemental magnesium. Two products can therefore both say 500 mg while providing very different amounts of actual magnesium. When shopping, look for the line that specifies “elemental magnesium content.”
With any form of magnesium, the percentage absorbed declines as the amount taken at one time rises. The intestines absorb magnesium through two pathways. At low doses, a saturable active transport pathway predominates. At higher doses, passive diffusion must take over, and passive diffusion requires magnesium to dissolve into free ions in intestinal fluid first (Schuchardt & Hahn, 2017). Rather than swallowing a large amount at once, dividing it into doses and taking it with meals generally allows better utilization. This applies to every form of magnesium.
Magnesium is not difficult to obtain from food. Dark-green vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and legumes all contain it, but when life gets busy, these are often the first foods to disappear from the plate. In numerical terms, the eighth edition of Taiwan's Dietary Reference Intakes recommends about 320 mg per day for adult women and 380 mg for adult men.
As for which form to choose, it can be hard to tell by looking at products on the shelf because packaging often does not make the differences clear. It is more practical to check two things: the amount of “elemental magnesium” per serving and whether the source and testing are clearly disclosed (see How to Choose Dietary Supplements for the same approach). More is not always better. The upper limit for supplemental magnesium from sources other than food is 350 mg per day.

Magnesium bioavailability is not determined by any single factor. One review found that salt form, solubility, and accompanying ingredients all influence it. How did we make our choice? Every form of magnesium has advantages and disadvantages.
